San Marcos — The Great Books Discussion Group will meet at the San Marcos Public Library on Monday, March 15 at 7 p.m. to discuss selected literary works.

Death in the Woods by Sherwood Anderson is the March reading. Death in the Woods, a short story first published in 1924 and reprinted in 1933, is a "retelling" of events from the narrator's childhood as he attempts to explain a death and its relationship to other lives. Anderson’s circular story-telling technique makes for a fascinating read. Not only do his individual stories follow this technique, but the entirety of works in Death in the Woods and Other Stories follows it, as well.

Anderson’s most enduring work is the short story sequence Winesburg, Ohio. His themes are comparable to those of T. S. Eliot and other modernist writers. Writers he has influenced include Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, and John Steinbeck, among others.
