San Marcos — Former San Marcos Public Library staff member Gary Goodson and his wife Robin Wilson will share stories and photos about their two-year-stay in Turkmenistan at 7 p.m. tonight at the public library.
Turkmenistan was a part of the former Soviet Union and is located north of Iran and Afghanistan. It is one of the most closed countries in the world.
Since 1960 more than 200,000 Peace Corps Volunteers like Goodson and Wilson have served in 139 host countries.
The public is welcome to come and hear about their experiences living in this vastly different culture. Wilson was born and raised in San Antonio. Goodson was born in Iowa but has spent most of his life in South Texas. After meeting and graduating from Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, they lived in Japan for three years teaching English.
In 2007, Gary finished a Master of Arts in Literature at Texas State University and Robin finished a Master of Public Health degree in San Antonio. They returned from Turkmenistan in December 2009 where Gary worked as an English teacher and Robin as a community health educator.
