Classic country, clean atmosphere at Geronimo VFW Dance
Geronimo — Geronimo VFW Post 8456 commander Bill Owen grew up in Bakersfield, Calif. in the mid 50s, when Buck Owens was just starting out on a local TV show. Owen watched the show every afternoon as a young teen. Buck, of course, went on to become a country legend with his signature “Bakersfield” sound.
That sound and that style stuck with Bill for decades to come.
Owen helps operate the Geronimo VFW Post dances several times a month, a gathering place for for those who share his taste in music to dance and socialize. The dance returns from 3 to 6:30 p.m. July 26 at the hall, 6808 N. Highway 123, 15 miles south of San Marcos.
The small dance has grown in popularity. And Bill thinks he knows why.
“The bands we have don’t blast their patrons out with their volume. Our patrons are usually part of an older generation that grew up with that kind of music. There are not many places any more who cater to that older generation,” Owen said.
The featured act this Sunday will be the Klassic Kountry Gold Band, performing country dance tunes mainly from the 50s. All proceeds from the show will go directly to the Homeless Veterans Program in Texas.
“This fund goes to everything from finding veterans homes to providing with toiletries like soap and towels and shirts,” Owen said.
The Geronimo VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary also hosts Saturday night dances the second week of each month. Owen says that he and other organizers take pride in the clean atmosphere, the friendly faces and the always-ready dance floor.
“It’s just a real calm atmosphere,” Owen said.
