San Marcos —
The conversation came up most Friday afternoons inside the art building at Texas State University over the semester. Students started asking what was going to be up at the Soda Tooth, a new contemporary art gallery on RR12.
The space, run completely independent of the university, is giving at least three art majors a completely hands-on opportunity with the business side of showing art.
“They teach you how to make art, but they don’t teach you how to do a whole gallery scene or anything like that,” Texas State University painting major Lucas Conrad said. “This has been a great opportunity for us to learn more aspects of (the art world).”
The space, a dimly-lit almost completely white room located next to Wake the Dead Coffee House on Ranch Road 12, has already hosted four shows since opening a few months ago. Conrad, along with photography major Bobby Scheidemann and fibers major Natalie Moore, have big plans for the upcoming spring semester, including more call for entry shows, movie nights showcasing numerous art films and even art lessons for kids.
“With Soda Tooth, we wanted to create something for the community that was great for students as well as residents,” Moore said. “This is all volunteer. We’re not doing this to make money. We’re doing it to have an outlet.”
Prior to opening Soda Tooth, the three met regularly at Wake the Dead to discuss current projects or upcoming shows. They felt a need to open their own space and display the contemporary art they wanted to.
“In terms of galleries on campus in the art department, for the most part its outside artists coming in, which is a great resource, but there’s only like two student shows a year,” Conrad said. “We were meeting at Wake the Dead one day, and one of us walked over to the space and noticed it was for rent, and it was super cheap and just a white room, which was what we were looking for.”
After a short break the first two weeks of January, all three say they will have a yet-to-be determined show up and going.
“With Soda Tooth, we really can do anything our imagination allows us to think of,” Conrad said.
