Jaques family cuts hair for good cause

San Marcos — 11-year-old Erin Jaques admitted to being a little nervous, sitting in the waiting room of Cuttin’ Up Hair Salon in San Marcos earlier this week. In a few minutes, she wouldn’t have a pony tail at all.

A trip to the salon Wednesday was a memorable family occasion for the Jaques family of San Marcos. The three girls in the family — sisters Aubrey and Erin and mother Jennifer — decided to each get six to 10 inches cut from their blonde hair to donate to Locks of Love. One by one, they sat at stylist Gilbert Sanchez’ station and watched their long hair disappear, all for a good cause of course.

The national organization uses the cut hair to design hairpieces for disadvantaged children suffering from various medical hair-loss conditions.

Jennifer originally brought the idea before her seven -year-old several weeks ago.

“Aubrey wasn’t too keen on the idea, so I said, ‘well I’ll do it with you,’” Erin said. “Since I don’t need the extra hair anyway, I might as well do this.”

Once she convinced her little sister to go through with it, mom decided to get involved too.

Sanchez says that as summer nears, he sees a lot girls and women approaching him about donating their hair to organizations like Locks of Love. As Erin says, it’s the perfect time to do it.

“If this were winter, it may be different,” she said. “But it’s going to feel pretty good once it’s cut.”
