Hays County 4-H and FFA members are getting ready to participate in the 2008 Hays County Livestock Show.
The Hays County Livestock Show will begin on Jan.12 with the Horse Show and continue Jan. 23-26 with the Junior Livestock Show and Auction. All events will take place at the Hays County Civic Center in San Marcos.
The Hays County Livestock Show is an opportunity for 4-H and FFA members to exhibit projects they have been working with for several months. While the majority of these projects are livestock, there will also be young people exhibiting their horse project, or food or handcrafts they have made.
All of these projects teach life skills such as responsibility, sportsmanship, and record keeping to the participants. Exhibitors also learn lessons in science, math and economics. This year, over 400 young people from across Hays County will participate in the show.
The Hays County Livestock Show begins on Jan. 12 with the Horse Show and presentation of the Hays County Livestock Show Queen and the winners of the Fritz and Alice Anton Memorial and Sonny Hawkins Memorial Scholarships.
On Jan. 23, exhibitors will check in their projects. On Jan. 24, exhibitors will be preparing to show their projects in the goat, rabbit, and lamb shows. The Home Skills and Ag Mechanics projects will also be evaluated on this day.
Jan. 25 brings the swine, poultry and beef shows.
The Junior Livestock Auction will be held on Jan. 26 beginning at noon. This is an opportunity for the exhibitors to sell their project at auction in hopes to recover some of their investment. Many of these young people will use this money to purchase future projects or to help pay for their future education. Last year, the auction brought in over $125,000 through the sale of 300 lots.
The community is invited to come out and support all participants at the 2008 Hays County Livestock Show.
