Sharpen your pencil or pull out your pen,
It’s time for writing poetry again.
Start right now to put down words,
Just make sure they’re all about birds.
Please take care that they rhyme,
And get them in to me on time!
You guessed it, the time has come for our annual bird poetry contest. Just send me your poem, by regular or email, and make sure it rhymes and arrives by the deadline of May 31. You must be a resident of Hays County and it helps if you include an address and phone number so I know how to reach you in case you win.
Send entries to Poem, 750 Cypress Creek Lane, Wimberley, TX 78676 or to jdothall@verizon.net.
Prizes for the winner simply boggle the mind. Start with 10 pounds of black oil sunflower seeds delivered to your door, along with a copy of my book, “Chirps,” a compilation of birding wit and wisdom.
But that’s not all. You’ll receive a dandy mini hummingbird feeder, suitable for attaching to an outside window with a small suction cup. Included in the kit is a feeder, sugar vial and refrigerator magnet.
Also, you’ll get a 32-page booklet with information on feeder preparation, easy maintenance, as well as general information on hummingbirds. Sample contents: “Trees, shrubs, and flowers that hummingbirds are partial to include azaleas, mimosas, morning glories, coral honeysuckle, fox gloves, fuchsia and petunias.”
There’s more.
Winner receives an unpainted wooden birdhouse, suitable for most any small or medium-size bird and featuring a metal clasp that allows you to open it up for easy cleaning.
Most importantly, of course, the winner’s poem will be published in this column and he or she will receive my heartfelt thanks and appreciation. Best poems that do not win may also be featured in this column as time goes by. I’m a sucker for a good bird poem.
So what are you waiting for?
Robins, egrets, motmots, too,
All the birds are fair game for you.
Write about feathers, write about flight,
Dwell on birds that love or fight.
But one thing sure, don’t tempt fate,
By sending in your poem too late.
Do it now, this very day,
When you win, you’ll shout hooray!
