San Marcos — At one end of the room, San Marcos Academy students swing away at a Mexican pinata. At the other, the kids show off traditional Grecian outfits. Aromas of French cheeses and sizzling Korean and Chinese food fill the air.
And later, Frank “Gray Wolf” Padrone of Johnson City demonstrates an Apache “straight” dance with a large group of observers huddled around.
San Marcos Academy celebrated its diverse student body recently with its third annual Culture Fair at the school. The academy has students from 15 different countries, including South Korea, China, Angola, Saudi Arabia, Belize, the Cayman Islands and more.
“It’s pretty unique, I have to tell you,” San Marcos Academy communications director Shelley Henry said. “It’s just a way of helping all the students understand and appreciate the different cultures and learn more about it. Since they’re all here together, we have that opportunity to share with one another.”
Students, representing their respective heritages, showed off artifacts, information posters and native foods for other kids to sample.
In addition to the dozens of student exhibits, the San Marcos High School Salsa Band performed, followed by a demonstration from Padrone and several family members.
“They really loved all the food,” Henry said. “It’s fun to see the kids going around and telling each other ‘oh, you have to have some of that over there.’ (The fair) really does foster an appreciation of we’re different, and let me learn what I can from you.’”
