New Braunfels — Two distinguished scholars will share their experiences, insights and visions for the future of Jewish-Christian dialogue and relations during a student-initiated theology symposium at Texas Lutheran University on Feb. 22.
Dr. Esther Menn, professor of Old Testament and director of advanced studies at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, and Dr. Darrell Jodock, the Drell and Adeline Bernhardson Distinguished Professor of Religion at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., will present the Jewish-Christian Relations Symposium with lectures throughout the day.
Three of the Jewish-Christian Relations Symposium lectures will be held in Langner Hall in conjunction with theology classes. The first at 8 a.m. is entitled “The Painful Past;” at 9 a.m., the pair will discuss “Progress Since 1950;” and at 2:30 p.m., the topic will be “The Land of Israel in Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations.”
At 10 a.m., Jodock will speak during regular Chapel services on campus.
The Jewish-Christian Relations Symposium keynote lecture will be held at 7 p.m., Feb. 16 in the Dunne Conference Center of Tschoepe Hall on campus. Menn and Jodock will discuss “The Current Situation and Visions for the Future.” All of the lectures are free and open to the public.
Menn is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) Consultative Panel on Lutheran-Jewish Relations and of the Christian Scholars Group on Christian-Jewish Relations.
Jodock is a former parish pastor and was on the faculty of Luther Seminary and Muhlenberg College.
Menn and Jodock are each authors of numerous articles and several books closely related to the topic of the Jewish-Christian Relations Symposium.
The symposium is sponsored by the TLU department of theology, philosophy, and classical languages; the Brandes Fund for Religious Activities; and the Guadalupe County Community Symposium.
