PALS helping keep pets at home

San Marcos — Since moving from Mississippi, Karen Jones, a senior living alone on fixed income, has had a hard time making ends meet.

Community Action, a local charity, is helping pay for her electricity and she is forced to dip into Social Security every month to pay rent.

“"I was living on the money from my house in Mississippi for a while and now it's gone,"  Jones said. "When I pay my rent I don't have much left."

In the face hardship, Jones is determined to not let it break her apart from the four-footed, fuzzy members of her family, eight-year-old Squirt and 13-year-old Lil Bit.  She has had Lil Bit since puppyhood and acquired Squirt after her next door neighbor passed away four years ago and left the dog in her care.  James was all alone, with no family, and he was dying of lung cancer.  When he asked Karen to care for his beloved Squirt, she did not have the heart to turn down his last request.

“He asked me if I would take her and I agreed," Jones said. "I'm doing the best I can."

Jones was running low on funds this month and took it upon herself to share her own meals with her dogs until she read a PALS advertisement in a local paper.

After finding out about the PALS food drive held recently at the Half Price Books store, Jones was able to receive two bags of dog food and canned food to help her through a tough time.

“I made it a point to be there," Jones said. "I don't want to lose my dogs."

Jones said she is grateful that PALS was able to give her the dog food and hopes that they will be able to help others in need in the future.

Most of all, Jones said she is happy to be able to keep her pets at home where they belong.

“I just love them to death and they love me," Jones said.  "They give me lots of love and joy every day."
