Wimberley — Judy Williamson, an early citizen of Texas who moved to Hays County in 1851, will be remembered Thursday by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. The DRT’s San Marcos chapter will dedicate a memorial at her gravesite in the little Hugo Cemetery on Purgatory Road near FM 32.
“A DRT memorial medallion may be placed at the grave of an individual designated as a citizen of the Republic of Texas; that is, a person known to have lived in Texas before statehood,” said Polly Wright, president of the local Moon McGehee Chapter of DRT. “For all who treasure their heritage and love history, gravesite memorials are a special tribute, and we hope members of the community will join us.”
In 1838 Judy Jones moved with her grandmother’s large family from Arkansas into what is now Cass County, then married into the Williamson family who settled in Hays County around 1851. The Williamsons first acquired land in San Marcos and then moved to Purgatory Springs.
The memorial dedication ceremony will take place at the Hugo Cemetery Thursday afternoon around 2 p.m. Those attending at Hugo Cemetery should wear comfortable walking shoes.
