San Marcos — It’s all about the future.
That’s how Kent Finlay describes Saturday’s marathon 12 hours of country music at his Cheatham Street Warehouse.
Sponsored by Momar Music of San Antonio, the marathon kicks off at 2 p.m. and won’t end until 2 p.m. In addition to a lineup of more than 15 bands, music lovers will be able to purchase tickets for drawings for literally thousands of dollars worth of musical equipment including guitars, amps, stage wedge monitors, PA speakers, Marshall acoustic guitar amps, home surround sound systems and car audio systems.
In return for their ticket, they’ll receive that amount of Momar Music gift certificates, Finlay says.
Headliner for the event is Big John Mills and the Road Dawgs. Mills has been named Texas Musician of the Year twice by the Texas Music Association, and frequently returns to the Cheatham Street stage.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Finlay’s Cheatham Street Music Foundation, an entity devoted to “developing, promoting and perpetuating Texas Music,” Finlay says.
Currently, the foundation hosts seminars on music business-related topics like how to copyright songs and finding a record producer. In the future, Finlay says he’d like to start a musician-in-residence type program. “When we get enough money we’re going to build a cabin in the woods and select a songwriter to spend a year there,” he says.
He’d also like to see the city of San Marcos acknowledge perennial award-winner George Strait, who got his start with his band Ace in the Hole on the Cheatham street stage. “The biggest act in the world started in San Marcos and we don’t have a street named after George Strait. That’s ridiculous.”
Before that happens, though, he’ll continue in what he’s doing now, calling attention to San Marcos’ importance in Texas music.
“I want to bring some honor to music people that have ties to San Marcos,” he says.
And then, there’s the future, a time Finlay envisions someone will “carry on the work that I’ve been doing into forever, developing music and keeping a place for music.
