Mariachis in the Making

Local Academy students ‘warm up’ for competition with SMPL performance

The San Marcos Mariachi Academy will perform at the San Marcos Public Library on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

This performance is a dress rehearsal for an upcoming competition in San Antonio on Nov. 20. Students from the intermediate group, Mariachi Humildad, and the advanced class, Mariachi Bondad, will be competing. The beginners’ class will perform at the library but will not compete in San Antonio at this time.

The school has acquired prestige and draws students from San Antonio, Lockhart, Seguin, San Marcos, Wimberley, Kyle, Austin and even as far as Uvalde. The Mariachi Academy works with more than 50 students on a weekly basis and up to 80 during its annual two-week summer camp.

Some accolades and achievements include second place at MariachiFest in Orlando Fla. (2007), third place at Fiesta del Mariachi in San Marcos (2008), and third place at the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza in San Antonio (2008.) The group was also the subject of a documentary entitled “What Sounds Fast” in 2006 and has been featured in newspaper articles and TV news segments since its inception.

The ensemble is recording a CD and plans to represent San Marcos on an international level in the near future.
