San Marcos —
Saturday, Aug. 20 is the annual International Homeless Pet Day.
PALS — Pet Prevent A Litter of Central Texas — acclaims this day in hopes to stir the hearts of the community.
“PALS volunteers work every day to end a Texas tragedy that overwhelms animal shelters each year — pet overpopulation,” PALS Executive Director Sharri Boyett said.
Since 1992, animal welfare organizations around the world join together to recognize the third Saturday of August to raise awareness about the pet overpopulation epidemic and to bring awareness of the plight of homeless pets.
The world around us is in challenging times and this means more and more pets are without good homes, Boyett said.
“There are many families forced to give up their pets because they simply can't afford to take care of them,” Boyett said. “PALS helps individuals and families afford to spay and neuter their pets. The more families PALS is able to help with financial aid in assisting with spaying and neutering the less homeless pets will be in shelters and euthanized.”
PALS volunteers work to raise awareness and funds to prevent overpopulation that results in homeless pets. The group depends on donations both from private individuals and corporations. As donations allow, PALS provides pet food to bridge pet owners through hard times. PALS needs your donations of cash, supplies, pet food and volunteers' time.
“At PALS, we believe every dog and cat deserves a loving, responsible home. Even if you don’t own a pet and you have a heart for those who have no voice, please help support this cause and give a helping paw to them,” Boyett said.
There are many ways to help PALS with this cause:
1. Volunteer for PALS or at your local shelter
2. Donate dog and cat food
3. Volunteer to donate other items such as blankets, crates, food and water bowls
4. If you tweet or Facebook, use this to network cases of homeless animals
5. Spay and neuter your own pets so that there are no "accidents"
Pet Prevent A Litter (PALS) of Central Texas is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization serving Hays, Comal, Guadalupe and Caldwell counties. PALS provides services to low-income pet owners so that their animals may remain in their homes. For more information visit preventalitter.com.
