Toastmasters elect new officers

San Marcos — The San Marcos Toastmasters Club, now in its 20th year of operation, announced this week its newly-elected officers for 2010-2011.

During the coming year, the panel will oversee club activities dedicated to developing and improving the public speaking and leadership abilities of its members.

Club officers for the 2010-2011 term are Ren Linér, president, Aart Millecam, vice-president of education, Sandra Smith, vice-president of membership, Greg Bolton, vice-president of public relations, Sharon Offer, secretary/treasurer and Katherine Toivonen, sergeant-at-arms.

According to Linér, the learning experience of Toastmasters can be invaluable to the personal and professional lives of its members.

“Whether you are making a business presentation or just conversing with your neighbor, the manner in which you communicate can have a great impact on how you are perceived. Toastmasters helps its members gain confidence, poise, and better listening skills in a welcoming, supportive, and fun environment. Many of our members came to Toastmasters because they were terrified to speak in front of a crowd,” Liner said. “Now, they can't wait to get up there.”

The San Marcos Toastmasters Club currently meets at the LBJ Museum on the San Marcos town square, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.every Tuesday evening.

For more information about the Toastmasters Club or their meetings, visit http://sanmarcos.freetoasthost.org (there is no “www” in the website's address). Visitors are welcome, and no special invitation is needed.

Later this year, the San Marcos Toastmasters Club will hold its 1,000th meeting. Linér is a charter member, having been instrumental in forming the club in 1991.
