The Journey Continues

The Journey Continues: Juneteenth

My journey this week took me to Juneteenth and freedom. It started when the General Order No. 3 was delivered to Texas on June 19, 1865, two-and-a-half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of Jan. 1, 1863, and was delivered by U.S. General Gordon Granger: “The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer.” Juneteenth has become an official state holiday. Yesterday it was celebrated in cities and towns across the entire United States.

Tanger Outlets San Marcos abuzz with launch of urban beekeeping program

Tanger Outlets San Marcos is helping pioneer the company’s new pollinator project, installing its own honeybee colony on the center’s rooftop this month. Make It Light

When the mercury rises, savvy cooks know lighter fare is the name of the game. Light recipes can be made even better by incorporating fresh produce that’s full of vitamins and minerals. Pugster Butterfly Bush: Fragrance and fun collide

Does Your Nose Know What My Nose Knows was the name of a creative article written by an author during my time as the Executive Director of the American Rose Society. Obviously, the reference was to the fragrance found in roses. I would like to pass this question on to you and the butterfly bush or buddleia. Mrs. Jan and I are blissfully on the same page when it comes to the Pugster varieties we are growing.

Common Unity

This year, San Marcos organizations are coming together in a sense of community, commemoration and fellowship to host the first ever countywide Juneteenth celebration. The Dunbar Heritage Association, the Hays County Historical Commission, Cephas House and the Calaboose Museum will hold a series of events — some of which are already underway — to share the history and culture of Black Americans in our community.
