Belles behind ball: Tickets on sale for Sept. 16 mermaid-inspired event

Save the date for the opulent Mermaid Society Ball that will take place Friday, Sept. 16 from 7 to 11:30 p.m. on the grounds of The Meadows Center, formerly Aquarena Springs.

The private evening includes the rooftop MERtini Bar sponsored by Dripping Springs Vodka, craft beer provided by San Marcos’ newest brewery Altmeyer & Lewis Brewing Company and catering by Root Cellar Café and Bakery.   

The Blue Jazz Faction will perform on the rooftop, and a special performance from the SMART Orchestra is also planned.

Grito for Los Texmaniacs: Community invited to savor renowned band’s TexMex flavor

Seasoned musician Max Baca, el jefe of the bajo sexto and frontman of Los Texmaniacs, has a long and fascinating history in performing well-received music that transcends barriers.

Hailing from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Baca credits his father, Max Baca Sr., as the biggest influence on his career. 

At age 5, Baca began playing the accordion before joining his father’s band at age 7.

Grant workshop deadline is Aug. 19: Free event will take place on Aug. 23 at the Price Center

The Texas State Faculty and Staff Association’s Life-Long Learning Program, in partnership with the San Marcos Price Center, is offering a free grant workshop for non-profit organizations in the greater San Marcos area.

The grant workshop will take place Tuesday, Aug. 23 from 1 to 3 p.m. and will be presented by Stephanie Korcheck, the College of Education’s research coordinator for proposal development. 

Korcheck is noted for having a wealth of suggestions to share, a strong “winning average,” as well as a significant database of possible funding sources.

The Price Center and its in-house chef, Ray Abiza, formerly of Euro Café, are pleased to announce a new Sunday Brunch service they will be offering in the Center’s Tea Room on the first Sunday of each month, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning Aug. 7.
