Lap-driving with pets

While driving under the influence was once the major focus of safety on the road, distracted driving of all kinds has gained national attention in recent years. Texting and driving has proven to be the latest serious road hazard; it has cost a number of lives, and 42 states have developed laws and campaigns against it.
Now many states are focusing their attention on a new threat - one that has gone under the radar thus far, but may prove to be as dangerous as texting and driving. This one involves the widely practiced habit of driving with a pet on one's lap.

A new xeriscape landscape opened up vistas both to and from the house and complemented its Southwestern architectural style.

Before the renovation, the original shrubbery in front blocked window views with thick green leaves and a tree too close to the house. PHOTOS COURTESY OF SHARON LOCKETT.

January Yard of the Month

Spring Lake Garden Club’s January Yard of the Month, at 1133 Belvin Street in San Marcos’ historic district, is a model for creative renovation of a neglected older home into a neighborhood jewel. Three years ago Chris Secrest, who also lives in the district, purchased this Spanish style stucco house, built in 1930 but vacant for many years and cloaked in overgrown shrubbery. He spent a year completely renovating the property but maintained its original architectural charm, including graceful arches around the entry porch.
