Life’s Journey: Ophelia Coleman, guided by faith

"Brother" Jim Lanning - Daily Record Columnist

My journey last week took me to the bedside of Mrs. Ophelia Coleman, age 72, a BISM (born in San Marcos), retired from what is now Texas State University. I learned earlier that she is a direct descendant of Martha Benny Lawshe, a slave born in Georgia in 1829, and brought to San Marcos in the 1850s by Colonel-Doctor Peter Woods to his large tract of land located between the Blanco and San Marcos Rivers. She died at age 93 in 1933 in San Marcos and is buried in the San Marcos-Blanco Cemetery on Post Road.

Answers to Go with Susan Smith: ‘Will’ versus ‘shall’: grammar police

Susan Smith - Daily Record Columnist

Q:  I love the library’s BBC videos.  “Masterpiece Theatre” is my favorite.  I noticed that the actors often say ‘shall’ when I would typically say ‘will.’ What do the grammar police have to say on that subject?

A: The grammar police—as represented by the English language usage books on our reference shelves—are of one mind as regards the will/shall issue.
