Nelda Martinez, 16, a state finalist in pageant

Nelda Martinez, 16, has been chosen as a state finalist in the National American Miss Texas Pageant to be held July 30 and 31 at the Intercontinental in Dallas.

Martinez, the daughter of Melissa Guerrero, is involved in cheerleading and the marching band. She enjoys spending time with friends, writing stories and drawing as her pastimes.

Her sponsors for the pageant include Benita Martinez, Keith and Melva Bakker, KND's Resale Boutique, Melissa Guerrero, Rail Heating Products and Services Inc., Star Manufacturing, Ltd. and The Spot.

Late professor Daniel Hannon's last design project is complete, just short of the one-year anniversary of his death. 

Last year, Hannon designed a Little Free Library for his neighborhood, Deerwood Estates. He took on the project at the request of his neighbors, Priscilla Leder and Barbara Pascoe, whose lot near the entrance of Deerwood Estates makes a perfect location for the library.

Mermaid Week SMTX 2016 festivities

Tuesday, Sept. 6 – In honor of International Mermaid Day, the Mermaid Society SMTX will host its first fantasy “crown” making event.  This is planned to be an annual activity to make ready for the festivities during Mermaid Week.  Location TBD.


Sunday, Sept. 9 – San Marcos Cinema Club and SMART Orchestra will present a silent French film featuring mermaids with live score.
