Exploring Nature: The beauty of hummingbirds

I received a coffee-table- size book titled “Hummingbirds” for Christmas. It is by Nancy Newfield and is filled with great color photos of hummers. Here are a few interesting factoids I picked up from the book:

Hummingbirds clean their bill after eating nectar because the sticky syrup can seal the bill closed as it dries.

Frequent grooming is required to keep feathers in top condition, to remove worn feathers and to pick off external parasites such as tiny mites.

Simon Youth Foundation seeks applicants for scholarships

San Marcos Premium Outlets and Round Rock Premium Outlets are once again proud to help a deserving graduating senior pay for college. Simon Youth Foundation, a national nonprofit that provides educational opportunities for at-risk high school students, is now looking for qualified applicants who live in the surrounding community.

Each year, Simon Youth Community Scholarships are awarded in every community across the country that is home to Simon, Mills or Premium Outlets malls. The application period has begun and ends on March 1.

SMCISD boasts speech and debate winners

For the second weekend in a row, the San Marcos High School’s Speech and Debate Team placed 1st in Policy Debate at a Texas Forensic Association (TFA) invitational tournament.  The team of junior Will Hutchinson and sophomore Sean Bryan were the tournament's top seed and went undefeated on their way to becoming tournament champions. 

Wimberley Players to host Valentine's performance

On Valentine's evening Feb. 14, the Wimberley Playhouse will be ringing with romantic and rollicking songs by singers of the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Austin. The group will perform a sampling of Victorian comedy and song from the renowned composer Arthur Sullivan and librettist W. S. Gilbert.

The special Valentine performance is a mini-fundraiser for the Players.
