Protesters shine light on war in Iraq

From staff reports

San Marcos On the fifth anniversary of the beginning of the war in Iraq, a group of San Marcos residents opposed to the fighting marked the occasion with a flashlight protest on the courthouse square.

“I think this is the expression of a lot of people who are disappointed with the war in Iraq,” said Rev. Mike Miller, Texas State campus minister. Miller, whos brother was killed during the Vietnam War, joined activists by holding signs like “Honk for Peace” and “Five Years too Many.”

Former Army Specialist Greg Foster was also among protesters. Foster served three years in the U.S. Army and was deployed for one year in Baghdad.

“My experience in the military and Iraq made me question if we were doing the right thing and whether or not Iraq was better off with us being there,” Foster said.

At twilight demonstrators joined in a “circle of peace” around the courthouse with flashlights and candles in hand to remember those lost – both American and Iraqi – during the past five years.

Four veterans will speak about the war tonight at 7 p.m. in the LBJ Student Center, Room 3-14 on the Texas State campus. The program is entitled, “Iraq War Veterans Speak Out.”
