Editor,
A true symbol of Christmas: A bright red kettle and a ringing bell.
To many it does not seem to be Christmas without this familiar sight. Children are excited by this vision that Santa Claus is near and they love to ring the bell and drop money in the kettle. Adults know it is an easy and safe way to help those who need help in the San Marcos community.
The Salvation Army uses all the money collected in our kettles to help our neighbors, who face a bleak holiday season. Last year $41,000 was collected and used to aid these locally, and all of us understand that the need is greater this year. Bare Christmas trees and hunger will be all around us. Your help is needed as a volunteer to ring one of the bells or to put some extra money in the kettle whenever you pass one.
There are six locations of national companies in San Marcos that invite The Salvation Army to collect money at their front door.
Look for the red kettles at both Walgreens, both entrances of Wal-Mart, entering Sam’s Club and Hobby Lobby. These companies are interested in helping the less fortunate in the community. The need is great, much help is needed.
The kettle started in 1891 to provide funds to support a dinner for the poor of San Francisco, and it has grown over the years to be the primary icon for giving to help others over the Christmas season.
It has gained universal trust over the years to be a trustworthy and dependable partner in reaching out to those in need.
We know the needy are here but stay invisible to us. They do turn to the Salvation Army and ask for help. They know that true help does come from The Salvation Army.
Will you help? Volunteer to be a bell ringer or make a special donation.
Call The Salvation Army Service Center of San Marcos, Delores Crittendon, 754-8541.
Doing the most good ... you will feel good.
