Police are investigating a home invasion-style burglary that occurred Thursday in which the five suspect stole electronics, money and marijuana.
It happened at the University Heights apartments at 1610 IH-35 North shortly after 7 p.m., SMPD Sgt. Dave Waugh said, but the victims didn’t call to report it until after 9 p.m.
Waugh said the resident and his friend, aged 18 and 20, were watching football on TV when someone knocked on the door. When the resident opened it, five black men wearing masks and carrying guns burst in and took an Xbox, money, marijuana, a wallet and cell phones.
Waugh said the victims described the weapons as a .45 caliber handgun, a “six shooter” and a sawed off shotgun.
“We have had some similar incidents where persons are knocking on doors and robbing or threatening the occupants,” Waugh said, adding that most cases have involved college-aged victims.
He said the case is unusual because the victim admitted he had drugs. “That’s very unusual for the victim to come straight out and admit” there was marijuana in the apartment.
