Identity theft suspect jailed

From staff reports

San Marcos A Buda woman arrested for identity theft last Thursday left a paper trail so long that it may take a while for investigators to reach the end of it, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.

“Numerous” file cabinets, two computers and piles of mail belonging to others were seized from 36-year-old Amber Dawn Rountree’s home in the 100 block of Bradford Street, the Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

So far, the mail has been found to belong to Hays County residents, but the press release referred as well to mail belonging to residents of “surrounding counties” and, in one case, Gillespie County.

Rountree is charged with the state jail felonies of forgery (two counts) and fraudulent use or possession of identifying information (two counts); as well as the misdemeanor charge of stealing or receiving stolen checks (two counts).

Other charges could be possible and the investigation continues.

Robinson said Friday afternoon that investigators were “still going through all those filing cabinets.”
