Officials: Derailment mostly a traffic mess

No spills or injuries in incident late Friday night

San Marcos Four boxcars of a southbound Union Pacific freight train jumped the tracks Friday about 11 p.m., tying up traffic across San Marcos for more than two hours as rail crossings from Aquarena Springs to Gravel Street were blocked by the train.

The four cars carried compressed cardboard. No hazardous materials were involved in the derailment and no injuries were reported, said Fire Chief Mike Baker.

“The apparent point of derailment occurred near Aquarena Springs Drive and Bobcat Stadium at the switch,” Baker said. The derailed cars came to rest between C.M. Allen Parkway and South LBJ Drive.

The train crossed the San Marcos River bridge at Rio Vista Park but did not spill any material or debris into the river, Baker said.

San Marcos Fire Rescue and its Hazardous Materials team, Police, Emergency Management staff, and Street Department crews responded to the derailment. Streets were reopened by 1:27 a.m. Saturday, Baker said.

Railroad crews worked through the night to remove the derailed cars. Minor damage to C.M. Allen Parkway was caused by railroad equipment and will be repaired.
