The "String Beans," an apparent reference to their skinny stature, will provide a lively variety of Texas Swing entertainment for the Price Center's annual Memorial Day picnic on Thursday, May 24. Reservations must be made by 9 a.m., Tuesday to secure a place at the table.
Barbecue lunch, a Joyce and Roger Kidd specialty) with potato salad, beans, cold slaw, drinks and dessert, will begin in an "on the grounds" setting at 11:30 a.m. at the Price Seniors Center.
Call 392-2900 and leave a voice mail order to reserve a place. A $9 donation at the door will be appreciated for this annual center picnic, sponsors said.
The "String Beans" trio describes its musical style as "old string band music from the '20s and '30s" with songs such as the "Beaumont Rag" and "Faded Love," plus such familiar jazz classics as "After You Have Gone" and "Honeysuckle Rose," along with some plaintive Gypsy tunes, all guaranteed to tickle the funny bone.
A critic from a noted bluegrass newsletter says of this aggregation, "Every time I think I have heard the best ‘another band’ comes along to prove me wrong" praising fiddler/leader Mike Montgomery, guitarist J.D. Pendley with his Chet Atkins sound, and bass player Ryan Gould, whose slap bass style is "the best."
The Price Center is located at 222 W. San Antonio St.
In the possibility of rain, the party will move into the "1910 Room" of the center.
