The San Marcos Area League of Women Voters (LWV) received the League of Women Voters of Texas Community Partnership Award at the recent state LWV convention in Fort Worth.
The San Marcos Area LWV was recognized as the small/medium League winner for its September, 2007, “Town and Gown Public Forum.”
Dallas and Tarrant County Leagues won in the large League division. San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz and Hays County Judge Liz Sumter represented the “town” while Texas State University-San Marcos President Denise Trauth and San Marcos CISD Superintendent Patty Shafer represented the “gown” at the forum.
The goal of the forum, in which the four speakers engaged in dialog to explore relationships between the four segments of the greater San Marcos community, was to create a better understanding among the participating entities.
New San Marcos Area LWV President Carole Belver said she was pleased that the local chapter received the recognition. On hand to accept the award were local LWV members Carol Peters and Irene Hoadley.
At its recent board meeting, the San Marcos LWV set the dates for two upcoming pre-general election community-wide events – a casual “meet and greet the candidates” reception scheduled for Sept. 15 and the league's candidates' forum to be held on Oct. 20.
The San Marcos Area LWV is seeking memberships and renewals for the 2008-2009 membership year. It is open to men and women, the League's guiding principles focus on belief in the representative form of government and individual liberties established in the Constitution of the United States.
The league is a nonpartisan organization.
