Fireworks sales wilted by heat

Stands to be open July 1-4 only

By Anita Miller

San Marcos Across the county line, Caldwell fireworks stands are open and ready for business, but in Hays County that’s not the case.

According to County Judge Liz Sumter, a deal between Hays lawmakers and the Texas Pyrotechnics Association has limited the sale of fireworks for the Independence Day holiday to July 1-4.

“The county has already passed a burn ban as well as not allowing ‘sticks and fins’ fireworks to be sold in the county due to the dryness and expected extended dryness in the county,” Sumter said.

“Chester Davis, president of the fireworks association, voluntarily agreed to also not sell ‘winged’ fireworks,” she continued, as well as to limit the number of days fireworks are sold.

“I think this voluntary step by businesses in Hays County is a great step in protecting life and property during these dry periods but still allowing time for all Americans to celebrate in a traditional manner,” Sumter said.

Anyone planning to use any fireworks had better stay out of town. Local ordinances in San Marcos and most other municipalities prohibit the use, transport or possession of all fireworks within city limits.

San Marcos residents are urged instead to enjoy the professional fireworks show that will be held at the culmination of Summerfest, the all-day July 4 event at City Park.

Rural residents who choose to use fireworks are urged to do so with extreme caution by the Texas Fire Service.

“It only takes a spark to start a wildfire,” said Tom Spencer, fire risk assessment coordinator for the Texas Forest Service.

The Fire Service recommends the following:

• Adhere to all county and city fireworks laws and restrictions.

• Use fireworks outdoors, away from dry grass and buildings.

• Follow label instructions on how to properly discharge fireworks.

• Only use fireworks with close adult supervision.

• Keep a bucket of water, wet towels and a garden hose nearby.

• Discard used fireworks; never try to relight them.

• Allow used fireworks to cool thoroughly before handling to avoid possible burn injuries.

Burn bans and fireworks limitations are also effective in other Central Texas counties.

To report a fire, call 911.
