Meet and greet

LWV offers opportunity for residents to get to know local candidates

San Marcos The public is invited to attend a San Marcos Area League of Women Voters (LWV) “Candidates Meet and Greet” Monday, Sept. 15, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the San Marcos Activity Center.

League President Carole Belver says all state, regional and local candidates for political office who will appear on the Nov. 4 ballot are invited to participate in the event.

Candidates are being given the opportunity to bring campaign literature and yard signs to distribute.

The league is encouraging citizens and candidates to mix and mingle in a sociable, casual setting. Refreshments will be served.

Although the candidates attending will be introduced midway during the gathering, all formal questioning will be deferred until the League of Women Voters Candidates Debate Monday, Oct. 20. The debate and the published Voters Guide are the San Marcos Area LWV's top election-year projects.

The San Marcos Area League of Women Voters was recognized with the League of Women Voters of Texas Community Partnership Award small/medium league at the 2008 state LWV convention in Fort Worth for its September 2007 “Town and Gown Public Forum.”

Open to men and women, the league's guiding principles focus on belief in the representative form of government and individual liberties established in the Constitution of the United States.

A nonpartisan organization, another guiding principal is that “democratic government depends upon the informed and active participation of its citizens and requires that governmental bodies protect the citizen's right to know by giving adequate notice of proposed actions, holding open meetings and making public records accessible.”

According to Belver, the Sept. 15 “Meet and Greet” is another way of helping San Marcos area citizens become better informed for the upcoming election.
