Economic crisis forum set at TxSt

San Marcos Texas State University-San Marcos will host a community-wide conversation on the ongoing national financial crisis on Tuesday.

Hosted by the Financial Management Association and the Student Economics Association of the McCoy College of Business Administration, the event will be held at 5:30 p.m. in McCoy Hall room 119.

The event is free and open to the public.

Alden M. Stout, director of credit risk at the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas will be the featured speaker. Stout, along with faculty members from the McCoy College, will engage in an interactive discussion with members of the audience.

Stout, a seasoned banking professional, has extensive credit risk experience in conjunction with enterprise risk management skills which encompasses credit, market, legal, compliance, operational, liquidity and reputational risks.  He has served in various risk management roles at a senior level at Bank of America, Key Bank, Aurora Loan Services (a Lehman Brothers Company), Aegis Mortgage Corp. and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas.  He has led the development of risk modeling several times and has created predictive models to address counterparty risk assessments and quality control systems to protect the assets of the bank and provide the company with advance warning systems to avoid and mitigate losses including prepayment models for mortgage backed securities.

In addition to Stout, faculty members from the Department of Finance and Economics taking part in the discussion include:   

Economics professor David Beckworth previously served as an international economist at the U.S. Department of Treasury.  He teaches macroeconomics and has researched in the areas of economic stability and deflation.

Visiting finance professor Ivilina Popova has previous experience working on Wall Street as head of equity research for Koch Capital Markets and director of Deutsche Asset Management.  She has taught financial risk management and analysis of fixed income securities and published many articles on the topics of investment analysis and risk. 

Business law professor Alexis Stokes previously practiced as a securities litigator in Houston.  She teaches legal environment of business and graduate special topics law courses and has researched and published on securities regulation issues.

Finance professor J. Holland Toles is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a managing partner and portfolio manager of Islay Capital Management, a Texas-based registered investment adviser company.  He teaches corporate finance, financial markets and institutions, investments and portfolio management.  He is also one of the professors working with the Student Managed Investment Fund.
