GPA numbers are on the rise for the SMCISD

By Joy Philpott

San Marcos CISD received 15 Gold Performance Acknowledgements (GPAs) in updated state accountability reports released by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). This is three more than the district received in 2008 and nine more than 2007.

Bowie Elementary received four GPAs, Crockett Elementary received four GPAs, De Zavala Elementary received two GPAs, Travis Elementary received one GPA, Goodnight Junior High received one GPA, San Marcos High School received two GPAs and PRIDE High School received one GPA.

Of the GPAs received by the district, six were for Commended Performance on TAKS, meaning that at least 30 percent of students in every subgroup earned a Commended scores on a TAKS test that they took in the spring of 2009.

The standard for a GPA for Commended Performance is higher this year than in 2008 when the standard was 25 percent. Two GPAs recognized the district's percentage of graduates graduating under the Recommended High School plan in 2008 to be 85 percent or higher.

The standard for GPA for Recommended High School plan is also higher this year, up from 80 percent last year. Seven of the district's GPAs were for comparable improvement, meaning that the campus outperformed at least 75 percent of the other schools in Texas who are demographically most similar to that campus. The Comparable Improvement GPA is notable because it represents that this school is among the most academically improved campuses in its class in the entire state.

• Bowie Elementary received GPAs for Commended Performance in both Math and Writing and for Comparable Improvement for Reading/ELA and Math

• Crockett Elementary was awarded GPAs for Commended Performance in both Math and Writing and for Comparable Improvement for Reading/ELA and Math

• De Zavala Elementary was recognized for Commended Performance in Math and Comparable Improvement in Math

• Travis Elementary received a GPA for Comparable Improvement in Math

• Goodnight Junior High was recognized for Comparable Improvement in Reading/ELA

• San Marcos High School was awarded GPAs for Commended Performance on Social Studies and for the percentage of graduates in the Recommended High School Program Class of 2008

• PRIDE High School received a GPA for the percentage of graduates in the Recommended High School Program Class of 2008

SMCISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patty Shafer commended the hard work of district students and staff.

“We're proud of the accomplishments of students and faculty; we continue to receive more Gold Performance Acknowledgements even as standards increase,” she said.

Campuses receiving Gold Performance Acknowledgements will be recognized at an SMCISD School Board meeting in December.
