Former San Marcos police officer the target of jury action

A Hays County grand jury has indicted a former San Marcos police officer for sexual assault after a woman accused him of assaulting her while on duty in September.

Craig Allen Hoskins, age 35, who worked for the San Marcos Police Department for a year, was indicted late Wednesday by the grand jury. He lives in Caldwell County.

The alleged incident occurred on Sept. 11. The woman reported to a police supervisor that Hoskins had assaulted her.

The San Marcos police immediately began an internal investigation followed by a criminal investigation as more details of the incident became known.

Hoskins was placed on paid administrative leave for several weeks pending the result of the investigation. He subsequently resigned on October 31, effective Nov. 3.

San Marcos police turned the evidence over to the Hays County Criminal District Attorney who took the case to the grand jury.

“As with any allegation of misconduct, we will thoroughly investigate it,” said Police Chief Howard Williams. “When appropriate, we will discipline an officer or refer the case for prosecution.”

Hoskins was hired by the San Marcos Police Department in August, 2005. He previously has been a deputy sheriff in Caldwell County, Tyler County, the Southeast Texas Narcotics and Intelligence Task Force in Silsbee and Hays County.
