— The Heart of Texas Chorus will host a convention and competition of barbershop quartets and choruses Friday and Saturday, March 12 and 13, at Evans Auditorium, on the Texas State University campus.
The competition will feature some of the premiere quartets and choruses in the Southwestern United States, and college quartets, as they compete for an opportunity to go to the “world series of barbershop singing,” the Barbershop Harmony Society's International Convention and Contest in Philadelphia in July.
Choruses and quartets from San Antonio, New Braunfels, San Marcos and Temple will be competing along with groups from South and East Texas, and even San Angelo.
A highlight of the weekend's activities will be the “Show of Champions,” Saturday night, 7:30 at Evans Auditorium, featuring the winners of the quartet and chorus contests; winners of the College Barbershop Quartet Contest; Genesis, 2009 Southwestern District Quartet Champions; Marcsmen, 2009 Southwest Division Chorus Champions; and 2009 International Chorus Competitor, the Heart of Texas Chorus.
Tickets for the “Show of Champions” are $15 in advance, $20 at the door.
For advance ticket purchases go to www.swd.org and click on the SW/SE Division Contest link.
The weekend events are funded in part through a grant from the San Marcos Art Commission.
