Wimberley volksmarch scheduled March 20

Wimberley — The New Braunfels Marsch und Wandergruppe is partnering with the Wimberley Mayor's Fitness Council to host a volksmarch called the Spring Walk in Wimberley on Saturday and Sunday, March 20 and 21.

Participants in the Spring Walk will have the choice of walking either five kilometers (3.1 miles) or 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) on an outdoor path in and around downtown Wimberley.

The walk is untimed and participants may begin any time between 8 a.m. and noon, but they must complete their distance by 3 p.m.  The starting and finishing point for the event is the Wimberley Community center located at 14068 Ranch Road 12.

The event is open to the public and the cost to participate is $3 per person.

A volksmarch (from German Volksmarsch meaning "peoples' march") is a form of non-competitive fitness walking that developed in Europe. Volksmarch associations offer incentive awards (usually pins and patches) for collecting a certain number of events.

Volksmarch participants enjoy recording distances and event participation in international record books.  The event is held regardless of weather conditions.

Organizers expect the event to draw approximately 300 participants for the weekend.

The Chamber, Merchants Association and the Mayor's Fitness Council will provide local merchant coupon books to participants along with the free pedometers, zip bags, energy bars and fitness handouts.

For more information on the event, contact the city of Wimberley at (512) 847-0025.
