— The Corvairs are coming.
The Corvairs are coming.
A Corvair car show is coming to town Saturday, April 10 at the Chuck Nash Auto Group from 9-11 a.m. The event is open to the public and admission is free.
The Alamo City Corvair Association (ACCA) is expecting upwards of 50 Corvairs.
It is expected to be the largest gathering of Corvairs in Texas for this Golden Anniversary of the vehicle model.
The clubs in attendance will include those from San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and Austin.
Ed Cole, chief engineer and former president of General Motors, designed the Corvair. His widow Dolly resides nearby in Lockhart.
These little air-cooled vehicles were produced model years 1960-1969.
The model line included sedans, coupes, convertibles, station wagons, vans and pickups.
Horsepower for the fleet ranged from 80-180 ponies, depending on the year and model. Turbo charging was one of the hallmarks of the Spyder models.
There was even a Corvair motor home called the Ultravan, powered by the same air-cooled flat six-cylinder engine.
Some Corvairs were given the full racecar treatment and made into Yenko Stingers; while others were customized into Fitch Sprints. Today these air-cooled Corvair motors are making a resurgence of popularity in the homebuilt aircraft industry.
ACCA is a charter member, since 1992, of the Corvair Society of America (CORSA), formed in 1969.
ACCA is hosting the 14th Annual Heart of Texas Corvair Reunion on April 9-11 in San Marcos.
This year’s event coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the Corvair production model.
