Take-in food for inmates at jail in San Antonio

San Antonio — Eating in never tasted so good for some burger-loving inmates at the Bexar (bayr) County Detention Center.

Jail officials in San Antonio are allowing outsiders to order and pay for, via the Internet, hot meals for delivery to some prisoners as part of "fresh favorite" food options.

Food services contractor Aramark initiated the "iCare" online ordering system.

Darrell Wagner, who oversees the for-profit operation for the sheriff's office, told the San Antonio Express-News that the county gets to keep 29 percent of every sale.

A jumbo cheeseburger with fries goes for $8.99. The food is cooked on-site and delivered to the inmate while still hot.

Pizza, wings and nachos are also available to inmates, at a cost, along with cupcakes, doughnuts and candy bars.
