A letter found in Lehman high school teacher Bowie Ibarra’s bedroom was among evidence that made him turn himself in Friday on charges of Improper Relationship Between Educator and Student.
“I love you, I always have. I always will even though I know it’s wrong,” said the letter written to Ibarra from a female student. “I can’t help it. You’re amazing. Don’t let anyone tell you any different ever.”
According to an affidavit of probable cause for Ibarra’s arrest, the letter was found on May 27, when deputies entered Ibarra’s home with a search warrant after reviewing statements given by the victim, outcry witnesses and the school principal.
The note was reportedly placed on Ibarra’s car without a name several months before. The relationship began when Ibarra called the student to confirm it was her who left the note.
Because the teenage victim told police that she and Ibarra communicated primarily through text message and telephone calls, Detective Kelly Woodward requested cellular phone records from both Ibarra and the girl between Oct.1, 2008 and Feb. 1, 2009.
“(The victim) advised that during the text messaging several inappropriate comments were made between she and Mr. Ibarra pertaining to them having sex,” said the affidavit.
She also told police that she had “phone sex” with Ibarra on at least three occasions.
Phone records showed Ibarra called the victim’s phone several times from Oct. 31, 2008 to Feb. 1, 2009. The affidavit said his phone number showed up 1,190 times.
Ibarra surrendered himself to authorities on Friday and is being held at the Hays County jail under a bond of $5,000.
Improper Relationship Between Educator and Student is a second degree felony punishable by two to 20 years in jail and a fine of $10,000.
