Hunter — As San Marcos City Manager Dan O’Leary says, it’s a sign that business is good.
Texas Industries (TXI) on Monday broke ground on the expansion and modernization of the company’s Hunter Cement Plant between San Marcos and New Braunfels on FM 1102. The expanded plant will potentially double cement capacity, improve environmental controls and add up to 35 new jobs, officials said.
“These guys can’t keep up with the demand,” O’Leary said. “It’s very indicative of the commercial growth in the area.”
The expansion project will include a Polysius 5/4 stage preheater/precalciner kiln system, low NOx burners on the kiln and precalciner and selective non catalytic reduction (SNCR), an additional NOx abatement on the existing and new kiln.
The project’s cost is estimated at $325 to $350 million, and will take two years to complete.
In addition, the facility will utilize the San Marcos water/wastewater treatment plant.
“This expansion will allow TXI to meet our customers’ needs and continue our leadership in the Texas cement market,” said Mel Brekhus, president of TXI. “Our decision to invest in the latest state-of-the-art air pollution and control technology also demonstrates our continued commitment to the environment and the community.”
San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz was on hand at the groundbreaking ceremony, and applauded the efforts of both TXI and the surrounding communities.
“You are standing where 40 other jobs will live,” Narvaiz said. “I commend the efforts of TXI, and am excited about seeing what our communities have done together.”
