Rockets’ red glare targeted by area bans

Hays and Caldwell hoping to diffuse the threat of fireworks

Those fireworks stands that will soon be opening along area roadways may look tempting; but officials in Hays and Caldwell counties hope residents don’t bite.

Commissioners in both counties have enacted fireworks bans for the upcoming Fourth of July that specifically outlaw “aerial fireworks which includes rockets with sticks and missiles with fins.”

Other types of fireworks remain legal but officials stress they should be used with extreme caution, as vegetation is dry from a worsening drought.

Burn bans are also in effect in both counties.

“Vegetation is extremely dry and even a tiny spark could start a fire,” said Hays Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Leroy Opiela. He added that adults should always be around to supervise when any time of fireworks are being used and should have on hand a water source.

Using or even possessing any type of fireworks is illegal within the city limits of San Marcos.

To report a fire, call 911.
