Deputy injured in accident dies

A Hays County Sheriff's Office deputy severely injured when a car hit his bicycle on Monday died today in Austin.

Transportation Deputy Fernando Amaya died in the intensive care unit of University Hospital at Brackenridge at 12:30 p.m.

Amaya, 44, was riding his bicycle on FM 150 east of Kyle when he was struck by a vehicle around 7 a.m. He had received massive head injuries, said Sheriff's spokesman Leroy Opiela.

Amaya leaves a wife and two sons. A fund has been set up at the American National Bank in San Marcos, 392-5588. Those wishing to contribute should specify the "Beatriz Amaya for Fernando Amaya" fund.

Amaya had been with the HCSO for 12 and a half years.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
