Two San Marcos men have been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the wake of a bloody incident in the Caldwell County town of Prairie Lea last week.
Authorities suspect it was a drug or gang-related crime.
The two suspects plus their intended victim had all been shot and were treated at Austin’s University Medical Center at Brackenridge.
According to Sgt. Paul Cowan of the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and the Chisholm Trail Special Crimes Unit responded to near Plant Road on Hwy. 80 on Sept. 24.
Around the 6200 block of San Marcos Highway (Hwy. 80), they found 36-year-old Dedrick L. Lott and 19-year-old Zachary T. Acosta, both with gunshot wounds. They were treated by Luling EMS before transport to the hospital.
They then located Orvis Lee Davis, 33, at his home in the 2800 block of Plant Road. “Davis stated the two men entered his home, assaulted and shot him,” Cowan said, adding that Davis said he responded by getting his shotgun and returning fire.
He was taken to Brackenridge by an AirVac helicopter.
Cowan said a shotgun was recovered a the scene.
Warrants were later obtained at Lott was arrested and his bond set at $5,000. Acosta was arrested Tuesday and Cowan said his bond has not yet been set.
The Chisholm Trail Special Unit, which has been in constant operation since its inception as the Chisholm Trail Narcotics Task Force in June of 2002, is asking for any information available from witnesses or residents concerned with this suspected narcotic and gang related shoot-out.
“The Special Crimes Unit has the ability and will call on our counterparts in the FBI, DEA, Marshal's Service, DPS and all our local agencies to keep these gangsters out of Caldwell County,” said Caldwell Sheriff Daniel Law.
