Mock has top geography poster in state

San Marcos — Sarah Mock's poster was selected from among 25,000 other posters submitted in the third–fifth grade category as the best representation of “Mapping the Americas: Exploring People, Places, Environment, Culture, Landscape,” the theme of the Texas Alliance for Geographic Education's 2008 Geography Awareness Week Poster Contest.

Mock is a fifth grade student at Hernandez Intermediate School in San Marcos CISD.

More than 25,000 students from more than 150 Texas schools participated in this year's poster contest, according to Leslie Giesenschlag, one of the 2008 program coordinators.

There were a total of four 1st place winners in the state, each representing a grade level.

A student from Plano represented the K-2 level; a Spring Branch student represented the grade six–eight level; a Canyon High School student from New Braunfels represented the grade nine-twelve level and Mock represented the grade three–five level.

Each year, the Texas Alliance for Geographic Education hosts an awards ceremony at the State Capitol Building in Austin to recognize the four 1st place winners.

Last week, Mock, her family, her principal and two teachers traveled to the ceremony where she was presented a plaque and prizes from Dr. Richard Boehm, co-coordinator of the Texas Alliance for Geographic Education.
