San Marcos High School will observe Education, Go Get It Week on campus the week of Dec. 1-5. In order to promote a college-going culture, the school has scheduled several creative ways to promote higher education, such as:
• All teachers and faculty members will wear T-shirts or sweaters from their college alma mater;
• Posters highlighting several state universities as well as specialty programs at area junior colleges will be displayed at visible places around campus;
• Floor decorations (with giant footsteps) will indicate the steps students must take to pursue educational “tracks” such as a four-year university, a two-year college, technical schools and ROTC military programs;
• Daily announcements that will feature facts and statistics about the benefits of gaining a college education;
• College fight songs will be played over the PA during passing periods.
• Lunches Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will feature a College Questions Table Tour. Tables staffed by counselors will be set up in the cafeteria during all three lunches so students can ask questions about career center resources, college planning, financial aid, etc.
• A College Mascot competition will be held on Friday where students can dress up as a mascot from their favorite university, and prizes will be given.
• The library will host a College Trivia Game, wherein four college questions will be posted each day. Students who answer questions correctly will receive prizes like college pens and pencils, back packs, buttons, college pendants, stickers, healthy snacks and a flash drive.
• Throughout the week, a Power Point presentation will run on all the television monitors on the campus that will highlight SMHS teachers' educational backgrounds.
• Also on Friday will be a dialog about the week's activities and questions and answer sessions.
The highlight of the week will be the Hill Country College Fair on Dec. 4 in the SMHS cafeteria, where more than80 colleges and universities will be there from 6-8 p.m.
The evening also includes a “Making College Financial Planning Count” presentation in the library from 7-8 p.m.
Topics will include: how to plan for and manage college costs; public versus private colleges and universities and affordability myths; types of financial aid that are available; options for families to develop a college funding strategy; how colleges and universities look at a divorced household; and how to send your child to college without risking a family's financial future.
