Ferrer to perform piano concert Saturday at TxSt

Alexias Lorenzo Ferrer will perform a piano concert on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Recital Hall in the Music Building at Texas State University.

The concert has been billed “An Evening of Sergei Rachmaninoff” and will feature his Sonata No. 2, op. 36 in B Flat minor (the original 1913 version).

This will allow a rare opportunity to watch this piece performed live because of its great length (30 minutes) and its difficulty and complexity, organizers say.

The concert will also feature other compositions by Rachmaninoff.

Ferrer is a 16-year-old home school student in the 11th grade. He has had a life-long interest in the music and life of composer, Sergei Rachmaninoff.

Ferrer has performed several concerts throughout the area.

For a number of years he has studied piano under Risa Schneider of San Marcos, and under the tutelage of Dr. Timothy Woolsey, retired professor of music, at Texas State University.

During the summer of 2008, he participated in the Austin Chamber Music Festival where he was coached by Dr. Washington Garcia, also a professor of music at Texas State.

Ferrer wrote a short composition titled “The Brook” which is for piano and viola.

Presently, he is a student of Dr. Jason Kwak, also a professor of music at Texas State University.

Ferrer is the son of Brenda and Hector Ferrer of San Marcos.
