San Marcos — Through this summer, regional leaders will meet monthly as part of a new citizen-driven planning effort to develop a blueprint of improvements for the Interstate 35 corridor to be recommended to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
The Austin/San Antonio area, which is represented by the IH-35 Corridor Segment Committee Three, will meet again on Wednesday, Feb. 10 to continue efforts identifying regional needs and potential solutions for the corridor, TxDOT officials said.
San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz serves on one of the IH-35 Corridor Segment committees.
“Ideas gleaned through public involvement processes will be will be consolidated into the MY35 plan that will be recommended to TxDOT,” she said.
“This effort is being conducted to allow citizens at every segment of IH-35 to have input in how we solve and plan for current and future transportation from the local perspective.”
Once the segment committee completes its regional blueprint, it will collaborate with the IH-35 Corridor Advisory Committee, as well as other IH-35 Corridor Segment committees, to consolidate each regional blueprint into a comprehensive, long-range mobility plan for the entire IH-35 corridor. TxDOT officials said this effort will result in a plan that reflects the interests and concerns of citizens for the corridor.
MY35 calls for a citizens' perspective on IH-35 improvements including identifying corridor needs, conducting public outreach efforts, collaborating with the public and local stakeholders, and creating regional transportation blueprints.
“San Marcos would benefit from IH-35 improvements as measures to relieve congestion, improve mobility and upgrade facilities to enhance safety. Increased mobility also improves air quality,” Narvaiz said.
Members of the segment committees represent metropolitan planning organizations, counties and other entities with an interest in transportation such as cities, chambers of commerce, economic development organizations and others. Members were appointed by the local entities they represent.
