With Monday the first day for candidates to file for the Nov. 3 San Marcos City Council races, one incumbent as already announced she will not be seeking re-election.
Council member Pam Couch issued a statement Friday saying she would not seek another term for her Place 5 post.
“This has been a hard decision to make because it has been an honor and privilege to serve on the city council for three years,” she said. “I’d like to thank my family, supporters and friends for their support during this incredibly rewarding experience.”
Couch credited city staff members for their contributions to the success the city has experienced over the past three years.
“I have great confidence in the city staff. Our city employees are among the best in the state and have done a wonderful job of carrying out council policy in innovative and creative ways,” she said.
The city council will consider officially calling the election at its meeting on Tuesday for Place 5 and Place 6.
The at-large seats are currently held by Couch and John Thomaides. The term of office is three years.
Filing will continue through Sept. 2. Candidates may pick up election packets and file at the city clerk’s office, 630 E. Hopkins, 630 E. Hopkins.

Aug. 3
• First day for candidate to file for place on ballot
Sept. 2
• Last day to file for place on ballot
• Statutory last day to order election
Sept. 4
• Recommended date to conduct drawing for place on ballot
Sept. 8
• Last day to file as a write-in candidate
Sept. 11
• Last day for a candidate to withdraw and have name removed from ballot
Sept. 14
• Beginning of mandatory office hours for the city clerk’s office
Oct. 5
• Last day to register to vote
• Due date for filing first report of campaign contributions/expenditures (if opposed)
Oct. 19
• First day for early voting by personal appearance
Oct. 26
• Second report of campaign contributions due.
