San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz said Wednesday she will not seek re-election to a fourth term in November.
“After months of thought and prayer, I have decided not to seek another term as Mayor of San Marcos,” Narvaiz said in a released statement. “I am incredibly grateful for the support of our community, the dedication of city staff, the hard work by the city council and the great achievements of the past eight and a half years of my service to the city.”
“This has been an awesome journey. A journey made possible by each and every one of you who have supported me during my years of service. I want to thank my family and friends who have continued to encourage me, but most especially my husband, Mike, with whom God has blessed me.”
Narvaiz listed numerous projects completed during her tenure as mayor, including the transformation of Rio Vista Dam, new fire department headquarters and city road projects.
Two people have officially announced their intentions to run for the mayor’s post: Daniel Guerrero, former city council member and current executive director of the San Marcos Education Foundation, and current city councilman Place 6 John Thomaides.
The Place 6 seat became open when Thomaides officially announced his candidacy for mayor. Voters will elect a new member to the Place 6 seat during a special election that will run concurrently with the general election.
Two people have filed to run for Thomaides’ unexpired council seat: San Marcos resident and filmmaker Shane Scott and retired San Marcos Police Department Sergeant Rodney van Oudekerke.
The terms of council members Place 1 Kim Porterfield and Place 2 Gaylord Bose are also up this year.
Porterfield has announced that she will seek to keep her council seat, while Bose has announced he will not seek re-election.
Planning and Zoning Commissioner Jude Prather filed his application seeking to fill the Place 2 seat.
The deadline for candidates to file for a place on the ballot is Aug. 24.
Early voting is Oct. 18 to 29 and Election Day is Nov. 2.
The city clerk’s office posts candidates’ applications on the city website daily as they are received.
