San Marcos —
Pet Prevent A Litter (PALS) of Central Texas recently received a $15,550 grant to provide 500 spay/neuter operations for unowned free-roaming community cats.
The program offers Trap-Neuter-Return-Maintain (TNRM) for four neighborhood areas: Victory Gardens, Blanco Gardens, East Guadalupe and the Dunbar community.
Experts say TNRM is the only method that effectively and humanely reduces the community cat population.
Trap-Neuter-Return-Maintain benefits the cats and the neighborhood. All of the cats will be humanely trapped, sterilized and vaccinated, then returned back to their outdoor homes, organizers said.
“PALS’ spay/neuter program is a great example of taking the initiative to improve the local community,” Susana Della Maddalena, executive cirector of PetSmart Charities, Inc., said.
"Targeted programs like these are the key to successful spay/neuter in local communities. Cumulatively, they are making a huge impact on pet overpopulation nationwide," she said.
PALS’ programs also offer free pet spay/neuter services to those who qualify residing in the Hays County area.
The organization’s 20-year-old pet sterilization program alters more than 1,000 animals each year on average in an effort to proactively fight the area’s pet overpopulation problem. PALS’ goal is to reduce pet overpopulation. The organization offers free classes to those feeding stray cats to learn how they can help.
“We are excited to increase the total number of spay/neuter surgeries provided through our organization,” Sharri Boyett, executive director of PALS, said. “We hope that our Community Cats TNRM program will soon become a model for other agencies across the country. Remember, fewer pets born equal the solution to pet homelessness.”
Pet Prevent A Litter (PALS) of Central Texas is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization serving Hays, Comal, Guadalupe and Caldwell counties.
PALS was founded in 1990 to help end pet overpopulation in the region. PALS provides services to low-income pet owners so that their animals will remain in their homes.
Volunteers are welcome and donations are tax-deductible.
