Forty-five JROTC cadets and six cadet officers returned to the San Marcos Academy campus after successfully completing their five-day Leadership Camp in San Antonio.
Stationed at Camp Bullis, the cadets gained new skills and increased their confidence as they prepared for leadership roles in next year's Bear Battalion.
Leading the trainees at the camp were senior cadets Chloe Rocha, battalion commander; Alex Vletas, battalion executive officer; Maggie Boylan, staff personnel officer; Nolan Rutland, staff security officer; Patrick Gibson, Bravo Company commander; and Alyssa Shallenberger, company first sergeant.
Selected as the camp's outstanding cadet was junior Jeb Yearwood of Georgetown, who has served this year as the Battalion Command Sergeant Major. Sophomore Daniel Sexton of Buda received the “Hooah Award” for being the most motivated cadet of the group, and junior Zoe Ruiz of Concan picked up the Personal Courage Award, for overcoming obstacles and challenges.
The Leadership Camp curriculum consisted of orienteering practice, a leadership reaction course, a confidence and obstacle course, physical fitness tests, drill and ceremony training and evaluation, classroom sessions on leadership topics and a Sunday devotional service.
“I'm excited that we had such a large turnout this year for Leadership Camp,” LTC Larry Revell, senior army instructor, said. “This is the most cadets we've taken to leadership camp since we became a voluntary military program here about six years ago. It was a great exercise for the cadets.”
