Pittman retires from Hays County Sheriff’s Office
San Marcos — On Jan. 27 a retirement ceremony was held at the Hays County Sheriff’s Office for retiring Deputy Alvin Eugene (Gene) Pittman. Deputy Pittman began his Hays County law enforcement career at the Hays County Jail as a corrections officer on April 10, 1989. He rose through the ranks and was elevated to the rank of Sergeant in the Corrections Facility. He attended a basic peace officers academy and on May 15, 1993, accepted a position as a Hays County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Deputy.
Gene worked on different patrol shifts, and on June 1, 2001, transferred to the position of School Resource Officer splitting his time between Barton Middle School and Wallace Middle School in the Hays School District. Gene was the first SRO for these schools and served in that position until his retirement.
Gene touched the lives of many students, dealing with children when they violated the law but also patting them on the back when they excelled at their school work. Retirement ceremonies for Gene were also held at Barton and Wallace Middle Schools.
Sheriff Tommy Ratliff praised Gene for his accomplishments at the Hays County Sheriff’s Office commenting that “Gene is leaving some big shoes to fill.”
Sheriff Ratliff wished Gene the best of luck in his future endeavors.
Gene served in the United States Marine Corps in his younger years and plans to spend his retirement years travelling and attending Marine Corps gatherings.
