Academy Valedictorian Boylan given Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship

— San Marcos Academy's 2010 valedictorian, Margaret Mary (“Maggie”) Boylan, has been awarded the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship.

About 7,300 Byrd Scholarships are given each year to exceptionally able high school seniors across the nation who show promise of continued excellence in post-secondary education. The scholarships are funded by the U.S. Department of Education through state education agencies.

The scholarship is named for U.S. Senator Robert Byrd, the longest-serving member of Congress in history, who died Monday at the age of 92. First elected in 1952, Byrd served nine terms in the Senate after serving three terms in the House of Representatives.

Boylan will be eligible to receive the $1,500 award annually for up to four years. She also has received a President's Scholarship for $16,000 per year to the University of Dallas, where she will attend school in the fall, majoring in journalism.

With a 4.1 GPA, Boylan was the San Marcos Academy valedictorian and a summa cum laude graduate. She attended the Academy for four years, graduating with the rank of cadet captain in the JROTC program, where she was the Battalion Personnel Officer. She also participated in volleyball, softball, basketball and the National Honor Society and served as a Student Ambassador.

The daughter of Roger Boylan and Elizabeth Makowski of San Marcos, Boylan was recognized for scoring a perfect 800 on the writing portion of the SAT.
