New San Marcos Fire Chief Les Stephens will be sworn in Friday during a special ceremony at 3 p.m. at the Activity Center, 501 E. Hopkins.
The public is invited to attend.
Stephens began work this week as the 12th fire chief for San Marcos Fire Rescue, a department founded in 1884.
The ceremony will feature an honor guard and posting of the colors, invocation, bag pipes and the swearing-in ceremony.
Speakers will include Mayor Susan Narvaiz and City Manager Rick Menchaca, who will administer the oath of office to Stephens. Stephens’ wife Marcia will pin the San Marcos badge on the new fire chief.
A reception will follow the ceremony.
The new fire chief takes the helm of a department with 51 professional firefighters, plus four administrative personnel, including the fire chief, assistant chief, division chief and administrative coordinator.
He is a 20-year veteran of the fire service, starting as a volunteer firefighter with the River Oaks Fire Department as a teenager. At 18 he joined the Garland Fire Department.
Over the past 18 years, he has served as a firefighter, paramedic, driver/ engineer, lieutenant, captain and battalion chief.
The Dallas suburb of Garland has 247 fire personnel and operates 11 fire stations.
Chief Stephens has an Associate’s Degree in Fire Protection from Tarrant County College and is currently enrolled in the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program.
